group critique

Historical Weapons – Tower Defence

Critique Advise – Identify a clear target audience and develop the educational value of the game. Suggestions of combining the tower defense with a card based game would allow his to put stats and facts about the historical weapons; he can use the Star Wars Battlefront Companion App as a game reference for this concept.
Other suggestions were to include calculations of mass/distance to work out the correct trajectory etc. This would be aimed at an older audience.

Possible Assets – A wide range of weaponry to choose from.

Riot of the Gods Overview ( 3rd game design)

adventure

role playing

maths

large game £2 or free demo up to level 5

It has 16+ PEGI rating because of subject matter, bad language and violence

You play as the character Deimos son of Ares or his brother Phobos.

The god of hell, Hades has started a rebellion against Zeus that will, if not stopped, end Olympus.

Hades has allied himself with every evil entity known in Greek mythology such as the Hydra, Cerberus and the Kraken etc. He starts the rebellion by releasing the Titans.

The educational aspect of the game is that you learn about Greek mythology.

The game will teach you about Greek mythology this will help because during the game you can talk to people and every time you do this they will give you a different fact about them this includes enemies as well. The facts can for example if you was to talk to Zeus he would tell you that he is the god of sky and all the other gods. Also it might tell you that he is the son of Cronus and Rhea.

Proposal

Section 1

Game level design project

The aim of this project was to make my own educational game and then design a level for it. So I created 3 different game ideas each with its own unique story-lines and its own style of
game play. For my game it will have a historical element. During my project I will be designing and modelling 8 3D assets. An asset is something that goes into a game, this can also include characters. I will only do a 8 3D models and they all will be fully textured. My 3 designs will each have its own educational subject such as history, maths, English  and sports.
The idea that i have decided to use is my Kastle Xiege one which is where you would play as either a military strategist, a king or Vlad the impaler. The game-play would be similar to "Cartoon wars 2" by "Gamevil".Which is a 2D tower defence game where you can assemble troops, use magic and fight with your hero so that you can protect your tower, whilst taking your enemies.
The game will be teaching you about Medieval History and especially the tools/weapons they would use in a siege. You would also be able to upgrade your siege engine so that you could tackle even higher foes, this can be achieved by finding blueprints and also finding the required materials it would take to construct them. The educational factor would be that you are experiencing what it would have been like to have to build war machines so that you could survive.

This is a screenshot from cartoon wars 2 during a defence/attack mission. The aim of the game is to stay alive and destroy the opponents tower. You can do this by issuing troops or obliterating them with magic skills. This is what I would be basing my siege missions off. So in my game you would be able to issue out troops as well as your weapon of mass devastation, using the same gameplay system(having icons along the bottom.

This is a screenshot from Cartoon Wars 2 during a hero mission. A hero mission is when you would have to play as a hero out of a selection of heroes to kill off most of the enemy forces before attempting to take the tower. This is what i would like the scavenging mode on my game to be similar to. For an example if you would pick to play as Vlad you woulod have to collect logs, pieces of iron and steel so that you could fortify your defences and your weapons.

In this game there wouldn't really be any interactive elements such as talking to people. Instead you would have the head of your chosen hero that would pop up and explain what you have to do.
Each mission would be split into 3 main stages

Each mission starts at a map.The map consists of the shop, the armoury, the work shop, the field and The tower.(similar to my idea)

Armoury - upgrade troops

shop- purchase troops etc

workshop- build siege engines based off plans/blueprints .Also can upgrade them

The field-this is the area where you play as a hero and must look for parts to either build or upgrade your siege engines.

The tower- the tower mission

Plan

Mentally plan how you would take the tower and what you would need.

scavenge

Play as your hero and look for the parts for your blueprints.

Gameplay would be similar to this

Fortify

Use your items/materials to build or fortify

My upgrade system would be a bit more advanced but similar in content.

Attack

Unleash hell
upon your enemies (metaphorically)

Section two

Influences, research, sources and ideas

When i started the research i had to do multiple mood-boards and research on existing games.
The thing that helped me come up with the Insurrection idea was the side-scrolling mmorpg "Maplestory" and the fact that I'm a big fan of metal music. I got the idea for Riot of the Gods from watching the music video for "Parkway Drive's-Crushed".The video has two golden gods trying to solve a puzzle cube. The thing that gave me the idea for Kastle Xiege was a combination of defender 2 and angry birds.
Also whilst I was coming up with the idea for Kastle Xiege I did lots of research into various siege weapons such as the Battering Ram, The Ballista and The Heliopolis (taker of cities and siege tower). A big inspiration to how my idea is going to work is the hit mobile game "Cartoon Wars".

Section 3

Techniques, processes and timetables

I intend to be using and improving various skills. Such as my drawing and designing as well as my researching. My modelling, my UV mapping skills and my texturing could also do with being improved
The first process to this would be doing lots of research into different types of games and their audiences. The second process would be to start designing ideas i would do 3 designs 1 for each idea as well as some further developments. The third process would be to construct the design onto 3DS MAX, then i would texture my model and finally evaluate it. I have also learnt how to create a Gantt chart and i am going to incorporate it into the whole of this project so that I can stay up to date.

Section four

method of evaluation

My method of evaluation would be to have a teacher and 4 of my peers to put ticks in each of the accomplished criteria. The Gantt chart i made would be useful for this. Also some of the criteria’s would have more weeks than others such as modelling and texturing; this is because these are the hardest or most time-consuming elements in the project. In this project I am aiming to achieve 8 completed model assets for my game.

Game genres

Platform gaming one of the most popular genres in games history is still massive despite it being one of the genres that started the whole video games industry. This genre consists of an avatar/character jumping onto suspended platforms and avoiding obstacles,

First Person Shooter one of the worlds greatest video game genres which helped start the industry along with platform gaming. This genre consists of an avatar shooting whilst being seen in a first person perspective.

role-playing  as the name suggests in these games you would play a specific role or a number of roles each with a specific skillset.
MMORPG Massively multiplayer online role playing games is a sub genre for the role playing scene. Also as the name suggests they are completely the same except that its multi-player and online.

Tower Defence as the name suggests this genre of video game focuses on protecting a tower or specific area.

Analysis : Existing/educational Games and there target audience atm

Brain training is probably one of the most educational games ever created. This is because the game includes its own daily regime so that you can get the best out of your brain. It is aged at the PEGI rating of 3+ this is because the game contains no violence etc.

This game known as History Of Biology is a game most likely aimed at teenagers due to the complexity in the science subject. In the game each level consists of multiple puzzles.

This game called Civilisation Revolution is about exactly what it suggests. Which is the evolution of our civilization. The game allows you to play as iconic characters from history such as Cleopatra, Julius Caesar and Genghis Kahn. The aim of the game is to build, defend and keep your civilisations alive. Such as collecting food and water to feed your people. This game is aimed at all ages but if your under 10 probably with a adult supervision.

"Cluedo" is a brilliant game that teaches you about deductive logic, so that you can unmask the  killer amongst the six suspects. As well as where, when, why and who did it the game in my opinion teaches you how to strategize and think ahead.

The game "Get Water" is a game that was released on World Water Day. The subject of the game is to teach people about the scarcity of water in India and South Asia. The aim of the game is to get Maya(the character) some water in her pot which you also must protect. This game is meant for all ages but children under 12+ should have parental supervision.

"Monopoly"One of my favourite games teaches you about one of the most important subjects, that you dong get taught in school! Finance. The elements about this game that make this very education in the field of finance. Is that the aim of the game is to buy properties, build houses/hotels and bankrupt other players. This game is recommended for ages 8 and upwards this is because of the difficult subject matter.

The "Rayman Brain Games" looks like a a great game for kids. Because there is no violence and it is essentially just a side scrolling platform game. But with this edition, it contains lots of maths and reading puzzles that can help to educate children at a young age. The game does not have a specific age range so that means anyone can play it.

Side scroller analysis (idk what it is)

I would like my Game to have the same kind of art style as Thing thing except that their would be a bit more detail. The gameplay would also be very similar. Since you can fight with either a gun, a melee weapon and of course Magik("magic).

Heli attack 3 is also a really good example of a 2d platform game. The back ground assets are also very similar to what I want to be able to use in my one.

The action animation for The mega online hit game Maplestory is pretty much perfect for a 2d platform game in my opinion. So I would like to be able to get to that level eventually.

Analysis of chosen demographic

I chose to aim my game at 16 yr olds I chose to do this. Because I am doing a story based 2D side scroller game based off music. This game would be very beneficial to students who are studying  music. It is also proven fact that most teenagers like very dystopian things such as an apocalypse, I tried to incorporate this into my storylines. For example in the Pop music storyline there is a Dark entity known as Scourge coming to destroy the earth and you must either join him or fight him.

An another idea I came up with was researching into the music course so that I could get a better idea of what kind of questions and topics I should have so that I could help them more.

These are the subjects that they study on their music course

-Composition
-Live Sound
-Music Management
-Music Technology
-Musical Theatre
-Theatre
-Theatre Production

INSURRECTION overview (game design and also final design)

Insurrection

£1.50 (no micro-transactions except that you can pay an extra for 3 different modes for £1.50)

music themes: Metal, pop, classical and alternative

Action

2D  Side Scrolling / Platformer

Music

modes  roughly 50-100 levels per story

Path of the "METAL-HEAD"
Prove that your a true metalhead by defeating all the bullies. When you think its over, a rift opens up letting loose hundreds of dark monsters and godlike entities. Beat therm all to prove your "A God Among Men" or join them and declare war on humanity which then leads you to a fight against Satan to prove that you're "The Strongest Overlord".

An "ALTERNATIVE" lifestyle
Prove that you are the most alternative person alive by battling against the bullies of your school. But then when you think your safe a meteor strikes the earth shattering the veil between life and death. Causing horrific beasts and the undead to rise from their graves. You can either fight against them as a paladin working for the secret society Gold Battalion or join the dark society Blackstone and become a maniacal Necromancer. Either way you must defeat the dread king.

Lets "POP"
In this story you play as a bully who must beat up all the kids so that he can get enough money to buy a new console. But things don't exactly go as he had planned when a new student arrives at the school who is a member of MI0 The most elite force of super enhanced humans in the world. The boy then introduces you into a new project called the Goliath project. Which is when a normal human has his cells mixed with the cells of jurodian(A dragon like beast).will he save the earth from scourge or become a member of the Black Nexus Devils

Lets get "CLASSICAL"
Time has been been reversed by Kreono the Bloodfiend. Only a member of the Elemental Conductors can Defeat this threat but what will you do will you fight or will you join The Blood Brotherhood and continue destroying the universe.

The path as a Elemental conductor allows you to use the ancient magiks of old to defeat the 10 lords and Kreonos of The Blood Brotherhood.

as a commander of The Blood Brotherhood you would use the black magik of Argonath to slay your foes and the 10 high kings.

APOCALYPSE
Survive the apocalypse(onslaught of enemies/quizzes from all 4 story lines includes bosses)

Educational values: A industry based question at the end of every level as we

Age : PEGI 16 (due to swearing in music) and comic violence

Target audience: Fans of music and Music students etc

view: side

point of each level get from point a-b whilst fighting off the bullies, creatures and dark entities. You also must collect 3 items during a mission, each item is different for each level and will be specified at the starting point. You can also collect different power ups, each power up is base of a different genre of  music these consist of normal metal, thrash metal, power metal, black metal, hardcore rock and death core- death metal

genres/power ups(with backing music) metal e.g

invincibility- Thrash metal music

magnet- metal music

double strength- hard rock/heavy metal music

kill everything on screen not bosses - death metal music

TITAN, Warrior Giant, Dragon king and Composer (grow to giant size and have all power ups) Black metal music

Speed mode- power metal music

The idea of this game is for music education students to learn more about industry of specific genres by playing through the intricate story lines.

The point in an education game for any age  is its supposed to be fun and educational. But When working with an older audience They would rather it be more fun than educational which I took into consideration when designing Insurrection. by writing intricate stories and then incorporating a single question at the end of every level. I also came up with an idea of collecting three items during a level and each item would have a note or inscription on it, so its like revision for the end question whilst fighting off good and evil.
